  1.              NO DIALTONE / or w/X0/X1/X3 NO CARRIER

  3.      Generally  if  the software says NO DIALTONE but you hear  a  dialtone
  4. through the speaker, the modem needs fixing. If you do not hear a dialtone,
  5. plug  a phone into the 'phone' jack of the modem to see if the dialtone  is
  6. getting to the modem. If you hear dialtone on the phone, AND it is a 1-LINE
  7. phone  line, the modem needs fixing. If you have a phone with  buttons  for
  8. more than one line, then you have the wrong line for the modem. It MUST  be
  9. a  single-phone  phone line. The 2 'live' wires must be on the  inside  two
  10. wires in the phone plug.

  12.       Often in parts of Europe (& some internal office systems) you need to
  13. use X0, X1 or X3 because the modem does not recognise the Dialtone (so says
  14. NO  DIALTONE).  This goes in the dial prefix ie; ATX3DT   This  allows  the
  15. modem to dial without 'hearing' dialtone. It also will dial if there IS  NO
  16. DIALTONE, because of a wrong adapter or bad connector. Then you will get NO
  17. CARRIER after a pause. Check your adapters and connections.
